Dear Friends - Please recall the case of 2 aged & widowed ladies in Parakkulam village, Palakkad, brought to the attention of KIT by Sri Veera Raghavan of Bangalore. KIT has supported this case since Dec 2006, under the Sponsor-A-Pattar scheme. We have been providing monthly sustainance allowance for these mamis since then, thanks to the generous contribution of Sri Veera Raghavan & others. Sri Veera Raghavan of Bangalore has reconfirmed his commitment to support these mamis with KIT and has extended his support of providing Rs.1500 every month for these mamis for the coming 12 months of 2009 also. On behalf of Kerala Iyers Trust, I would like to update you with the steps we have taken so far in this case. The background : These Parakkulam mamis were identified by Sri Sundara Iyer, uncle of Sri Veera Raghavan. The 2 aged & widowed mamis were living in penury & a monthly pension of Rs 100/ only. These mamis are right now living in the Parakulam East,which is enroute from Palghat to Trichur via Alathur. One mami's name is Mrs V.P. Sarala Raman, aged 64,widowed 4 yrs ago & pennyless. The other mami is Mrs Seetha Ammal, aged 68,widowed at the eary age of 28 & living alone since. Both the ladies have no issues which makes it even more difficult for them. When we found about these ladies, a noble Soul, not too well off himself, by name Sri P S Srinivasan Iyer (Ex Railways Olavakod) was giving them some small support. He is also secretary Kerala Brahmana Sabha & resides at Parakulam East. What KIT found in 2006: In 2006, Mr.Ramakrishnan, who is a Mumbai Pattar, on a visit to his native place, visited these sisters in Parakkulam. Seetha mami who is old is getting Rs.60/- from Brahmana sabha and Rs.110/- Widow pension. Sarala raman, who is also a widow and has lost every thing repaying old debts etc, is at present staying with her another sister Laxmi. There is no income for sarala raman and is fed at the mercy of her sister laxmi, who is also not in a well to do level still supporting blood. Sri P S Srinivasan is supporting the family as a good neighbour & well wisher. Action taken: This is a classic case of aged people not getting any support from anyone and the solution seems to be some sort of a sustainance allowance. That led to the idea of "Sponsor-A-Pattar" plan, wherein an individual member from the Pattars group or the associated GULFPattars or USAPattars or Kalyanam group commits to provide a monthly sustainance allowance to this family. KIT initiated a Fund raising to support these mamies in Dec 2006. An amount of Rs.14,500 was raised and this was sent to these mamies on a monthly basis In addition to this, since the beginning of 2006, Sri Veera Raghavan of Bangalore has committed to this responsibility with KIT and as per that these sisters are being provided Rs.1000 every month. As a support system, Sri P S Srinivasan of Parakkulam is still looking on the sisters on a routine basis. Latest Update: Sri Veera Raghavan of Bangalore has reconfirmed his commitment to support these mamis with KIT and has extended his support of providing Rs.1500 every month for these mamis for the coming 12 months of 2009 also.
