[Kalyanam] Kerala Iyers Trust: Help reqd for Medical trtmnt - Padma Iyer, Mumbai

Dear Friends,    Kerala Iyers Trust (KIT) received an appeal requesting support for medical treatment for Kidney malfunction of Mrs. Padma Iyer of Thakurli, Mumbai.   KIT Volunteer, V Mahadevan, visited the family and filed a field visit report.   Quick Summary:    Padma Kalyanaraman, 55, is suffering from Kidney malfunction.    Her husband Kalyanaraman, 61, is not well educated and earns a meagre sum helping some local shastrigals.    They have 2 children - one son & a daughter, both are married, and are also struggling to meet ends.   Padma has undergone a surgery on Dec 8th and one of her kidneys has been removed. They have spent a little over Rs.4 Lakhs in treatment at two different hospitals and have incurred quite a lot of loans also in doing so.   Kalyanaraman's financial status is not sufficient to support the medical treatment.   KIT finds this case a very genuine & deserving one and proposes to raise an amount of Rs.80,000 for this family to take care of the medical expenses and possibly pay off some of loans.   Of this target amount, KIT already has received Rs.43,500 towards this case, allocated from the lumpsum amounts, donated to the KIT Corpus Fund, by some of the members. The list of donors is provided towards the end of this mail.   Balance amount to be raised for this cause = Rs.36,500   KIT has taken a decision that any amount received in excess of this target would be kept in the KIT Corpus Fund and will be used to support the next similar case in the future.   The details on how to send your contributions for this cause is provided in the bottom of this email. Also the new account number for overseas contributions. ==================================   The Background   The Appeal    I introduce myself as PSG Krishnan,  (hailing from Palakkad), staying in Mulund West and is regularly going through  various activities taking place/published  in the www.KeralaIyers.com site.   I would like to approach this group  with a request for a financial help for a South Indian family.   This is to inform you that I have been approached by Mr. Narayanan, who is staying in my complex in Mulund West for some kind of financial help for a poor and needy South Indian Lady,  Smt. Padma Iyer from  Thakurli East (Thana Dist), who is suffering from Left Kidney Problem.   I would like to give a brief about Smt. Padma Iyer.  Smt. Padma Iyer  (aged 55 years), wife of  Shri. Kalyanaraman Iyer (Ramu-aged 61) now staying at Thakurli East, is suffering from  Left Kidney  Emphysematous Pyelonephritis  and was admitted in ICU, on 28th October 2008, for  treatment at Nulife Hospital, Opp. Tilak Nagar Post Office, Dombivli West.  Dr. B B Yadav at Nulife Hospital, Dombivli has given an operation estimate expenses to the  tune of around Rs. 1.50 lakhs to Rs.2.00 lakhs.  Smt & Shri. Kalyanaraman are hailing from Nellicherry Village, Palakkad, Kerala.  Due to the high cost of hospitalization at Nulife Hospital at Dombivli, she has now been shifted from Dombivli to a hospital known as Hira Mongee, Navnit Hospital, Mulund West,  managed by a Gujarati Trust, on 12th November 2008. The name of the Doctor looking after  Smt. Padma Iyer is Dr. Anjali Bhosale. They are not now aware how much more money they have to spend towards hospitalization and medical expenses.     Presently,  Smt. Padma Iyer is taken care of by her daughter  Mrs.  Rupa. As per the information given to me, till today, they have spent nearly Rs. 2.75 lakhs.  To meet the expenditure, Mrs. Rupa had sold all her gold ornaments and took loan from their friends. The treatment is still going on.   Shri. Kalyanaraman  does not have a steady monthly income and surviving  on a meager amount he gets from  upadhyayam (assistance to vadhyar)  and cooking jobs. He has  two children one daughter married and stays in Bhandup and a Son, who does not have proper education,  now works as a four wheeler Driver.  I do not know the complete family history.   Based on the request from my friend Mr. Narayanan for financial help for this family, I am also trying to raise some money through my friend circle for this genuine case. In the meantime, I also thought of Kerala Iyers Trust, (who are presently doing yeoman services by extending  financial help for the needy families) with a request to find out whether they can extend some kind of financial help to this family.   Please note that I have personally not met the family members of Shri. Kalyanarama Iyer. All the above information is given to me by my friend Mr. Narayanan, who knows this family very well. Since Mr. Narayanan does not have access to the computers, he has requested me to approach Kerala Iyer Trust.     Thanking you,   Yours Sincerely   PSG KRISHNAN ===========================================   What KIT found:    V Mahadevan, KIT Volunteer, visited Padma Iyer's family, and filed the following field report   FIELD REPORT   I visited the home of Mrs. Rupa Maini, the married daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Padma Kalyanaraman.  I also visited Hira Moti Hospital, Mulund, where Mrs.Padma Kalyana Raman is admitted and met Mr.Kalyana Raman, Mrs.Padma Kalyana Raman, son Manoj and also daughter Rupa. Based on the discussions I have had with Rupa earlier as also with Mr. Kalyana Raman family in the hospital at Mulund, I submit my field study report.   FAMILY BACKGROUND   Mr. Kalyana Raman, 61, hails from Nellichery, near Vadakkkantharai, in Palakkad.  Not much educated, he is providing assistance to some Shastrigals like Gopu Vadyar, Manakkal Vadhyar and also late Nana Vadhyar of Thane. Mr.Kalyanan and Padma stay at Thakurli, adjoining Dombivli in Mumbai.   Mrs. Padma Kalyana Raman, 55, though belonging to Palakkad, has all along been in Mumbai only, staying at Kalyan and also at Mulund before marriage. She is not much educated and has no regular income.  She is an active member of a group of women who regularly recite Lalitha Sahasranamam and other sacred Sthothras at various places.   Both Mr.Kalyana Raman and Mrs. Padma Kalyana Raman are the only children of their parents though they have a few cousins.   The Kalyanaramans have two children – Manoj, the elder boy, who is married and stays at Mumbra, near Thane. He is not much educated and works as a driver. He is married and has a child.     The second one is daughter Rupa, who is married to a Punjabi -   Ravi Maini, who stays at Mayuresh Shrushti residential complex,  opposite Asian Paints, Bhandup, Mumbai.  She has a son who is in the  4th Standard.  Rupa has studied upto 12th Standard and is not going for work. When I asked her asto why she didn't pursue her studies, she informed me that she had to discontinue her studies as she got married at an early age. Her husband owns a shop at Vashi, which they have given on rent, which is their major source of income.  She informed me that her husband is not employed elsewhere. The house where the Kalyanaramans stay at Thakurli also belongs to Rupa.    MRS. PADMA'S  ILLNESS   Since last one month ( from the Divali day, to be exact) Padma has been suffering from an impaired Kidney. It started of as Leptospirosis and she was even put on ventilators for about 12 days and it led to the impairment of one of her Kidneys. Initially she was admitted in a hospital at Dombivli, where they spent around Rs.2,80,000 lakhs. A Sonography of her abdomen taken at this time, indicated enlarged liver, a normal right kidney, completely collapsed urithrary bladder and an invisible left Kidney.   Rupa informed me that the hospital only extracted money from them continuously without providing satisfactory treatment and at the suggestion of one of their friends, she is now admitted to Heera Moti Hospital at Mulund. It is a newly started hospital ( around five years old) in the west of  Mulund.  The MRI Scan taken at Workhardt hospital confirmed an enlarged left Kidney. It has now been decided by this hospital to remove the damaged Kidney by surgery. They are not going for transplantation of this Kidney and Padma informed me that they would manage with the sound one. I spent a little time in going through all the papers relating to the damaged Kidney as I wanted to ensure that no attempt has been made to trade on an innocent person's Kidney and I revealed my doubt to Rupa also.   Mr. Kalyana Raman informs me that so far they have spent a little over Rs.4 lakhs (both the hospitals together) and that the estimate for the surgery is around Rs one and half lakhs to Rs.2 lakhs.  Surgery is on Monday, the 8th December.      FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE FAMILY   Kalyanaraman earns only a meager sum and that too not on a regular basis. Their son Manoj at Mumbra, does not support them every month, though he too contributed to meet the expenses for the present ailment of his mother. According to Rupa, he had to sell some of the Gold ornaments to realize money to meet part of his mother's medical expenses.   Rupa stays with her husband, son and in laws in a well furnished home at Bhandup. She has been giving around Rs.2,500 to her parents as financial support.  As she had to spend a large sum for the treatment of one her in laws afflicted with paralysis, she too had to sell some Gold Ornaments to provide some support to her parents in their present hour of crisis. Therefore both Manoj and Rupa are not in a position to provide further financial support to their parents.  Mr.Kalyna Raman also informed me that he has borrowed from some of his friends and family well wishers. He is distinctly unhappy as he feels that he has to depend on a married daughter for all his expenses.    Neither Kalyana Raman nor Padma have brothers or sisters to extend them an helping hand. Mr.Narayanan, through whom this matter has been brought to KIT, is a distant cousin of Padma.  The group of ladies with whom Padma used to recite Lalitha Sahasharanamam had collected Rs10,000/- through contribution from participating members and gave it to her as a small help.      The family now needs the finance to meet the expenses for the surgery involving removal of one Kidney as all their financial sources are fully utilized and looks upon support from altruistic agencies.  When I asked Rupa asto whether she had approached any other Organization for help, she informed me that they have made a written request to the Authorities of Guruvayurapan Temple at Dombivli and also to Bhakta Sangam, Mulund, but have so far not received any response.    V.MAHADEVAN     ============================================   How to send your contributions:   You may please send in your contribution either as a cheque or as a direct electronic bank transfer.
